FAQ

What Are Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™?

Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses — also known as light-adaptive, variable tint, photochromic, and light-responsive lenses — feature lenses that darken when exposed to sunlight and become clear indoors. These color-changing lenses can protect your eyes from exposure to UV rays, which can lead to eye problems later in life.

Are Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ Good for Your Eyes?

Transitions® lens glasses help protect your eyes from UV radiation and filter blue-violet light. They are also a good option for children, as most of the sun damage people acquire in life happens before the age of 18.

What’s the Difference Between Photochromic Lenses and Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™?

Transitions® lenses are actually a type of photochromic lenses. The best-known U.S. manufacturer of photochromic lenses is Transitions Optical, which is why photochromic lenses are often referred to as transition lenses.

Can You Wear Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ at Night?

Wearing Transitions glasses at night shouldn’t be a problem, even while driving. The lenses are designed to darken only in response to UV light, so headlights won’t have any effect on them.

How Much Do Glasses with Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ Cost?

Historically, transition lenses are known to add a significant cost to the price of prescription eyeglasses. But at Eyebuydirect Canada, adding transition lenses can cost as little as $100. Combine that with our affordable frames, and you’ve got a great deal! We even carry special frame packages that automatically include transition sunglasses for a lower price.

Do Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ Go Completely Clear?

Transitions Signature lenses are completely clear indoors, when away from UV light. Transitions® XTRActive® lenses have a slight tint indoors to provide additional light protection outdoors. Transitions glasses provide light protection inside and outside, with new technology that helps them fade back to clear faster than ever.

Can You Get Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ Coating on Existing Glasses?

No, Transitions® lenses change color due to the molecular composition of the lenses themselves, so there is no coating that can be added to transform a normal lens into a Transitions® lens. You’d have to have the lenses replaced to make your glasses into transition sunglasses.

The deals we offer on photochromic lenses at Eyebuydirect Canada are so great, you might as well keep your daily drivers and add a new pair of Transitions glasses to your collection.

How Long Do Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ Work?

Most transition lenses will last for the average lifespan of a pair of glasses — three years. When the clear lenses develop a yellowish hue at their edges and are less dark in full sunlight, they’re on their way out. Luckily, once your transition sunglasses are old enough to show signs of wear, it’s likely (past) time for a new prescription anyway.

Are There Different Types of Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™?

There are several different types of Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses. Eyebuydirect Canada offers Transitions® Signature® and Transitions® XTRActive® lenses. You can get Transitions® lenses in prescription or non-prescription glasses in your choice of lens tint color, including grey, brown, amethyst, sapphire, or amber.

How Do You Know if You Have Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™?

You should be able to tell if you have Transitions® lenses by stepping outside and seeing whether they darken in response to the sun’s rays. Keep in mind that testing them behind the windshield of a car won't usually give you the same result as being in direct sunlight. If your lenses show no sign of darkening after exposure to sunlight, you’ll know that you don’t have Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™.

Can Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ Replace Sunglasses?

While they are wonderful for protecting your eyes from UV light in the absence of sunglasses, Transitions® lenses are not a replacement for sunglasses.

Transitions® are perfect for running errands where you move in and out of the sun throughout the day and are a tremendous improvement over clear-lens prescription glasses.

For prolonged outdoor activities in very bright conditions — especially when glare is reflecting off water or snow — polarized sunglasses such as Transitions® XTRActive® Polarized™ lenses are your best bet for eye protection.

Do Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ Work in the Car?

Transitions® Signature® lenses may not get as dark as you’d like while driving because your car’s windshield is designed to filter a certain amount of UV radiation. This built-in protection can prevent your Transitions® lenses from fully activating.

However, Transitions® XTRActive® lenses were designed with drivers in mind and they get darker even when you’re in the car. This makes them a great choice for those who want optimal lens darkness when on the road.

Can Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ Be Polarized?

Transitions® recently introduced a polarized option for Transitions® XTRActive® lenses. So, as the lenses darken in response to UV radiation exposure, they also become polarized. This polarization filters certain wavelengths of light, helping to reduce glare from light reflected off surfaces like water, pavement, and snow.

Can You Get Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ with Progressive Lenses?

You can combine Transitions® lenses and progressive lenses when you purchase glasses from Eyebuydirect Canada. Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ seamlessly change from clear to dark depending on how bright it is around you.

Progressive prescriptions correct both near and distance vision in each lens. This combination of lens options is perfect for protecting your eyes from UV light while meeting all your vision correction needs.

How Can You Make Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ Change Faster?

There’s no trick to making Transitions® lenses change more quickly from light to dark or vice versa. Your lenses will darken faster in brighter environments, but they will always take a few minutes to change back to clear once they are no longer exposed to bright sunlight.

Do You Need a Prescription for Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™?

You don’t need a prescription for Transitions® glasses if you want to add them to clear, non-prescription lenses without vision correction. If you do need vision correction, you’ll need a current vision prescription to have new glasses made with corrective Transitions® lenses.

Can You Damage Your Eyes by Wearing Non-Prescription Glasses?

Non-prescription glasses are safe for your eyes, and wearing them should not result in any damage. However, if you need vision correction and don’t wear prescription glasses, you may begin to experience blurry vision and other signs that you need glasses.

It's also possible for prescription and non-prescription eyeglass frames to cause discomfort if they don't fit correctly. Be sure to adjust your glasses frames so the temples, arms, and nose pads rest comfortably on your face.
